Just some things I plan on doing throughout the summer. I wasn’t able to find a job because currently I don’t have a car anymore and I wasn’t able to find anything at my university since I don’t qualify for work study. So instead of dwelling on that, I’m going to hopefully do some awesome things will make up for it instead.

In no particular order whatsoever:

Web Development

Expand my knowledge of PHP and start learning Ruby on Rails

Redesign my website and actually use HTML5 this time ;_;

Create an awesome bookmarklet that completely changes the way people view online recipes (I might make a blog post about this later during the summer)

Create some miscellaneous web apps that would greatly help my fellow college students such as:

A cladogram generator that allows for tons of customization for different subjects

Some kind of database of tips for finding things on campus. Something similar to the concept of Foursquare’s tips for venues, but it shouldn’t need signing up. It could be like a Wiki, but I can’t see that going over well since lololololol we’re college students and we can’t be mature about things like that

School Related

Go over future class material so my chances of getting As are better

Stalk the course registration website for openings in some of the signature courses that I wanted to take last semester but couldn’t fit in

Other Stuff

Just some things that probably won’t help with anything in particular

Learn how to cook

Convert half of my room into an office-esque environment.

Learn about circuits

Learn how to use power tools without causing a power outage in the house…

Start a blog/website/etc. about XYZ that caters to the XYZ community so I can earn some extra money and also maybe something nice to put in my portfolio.

Do some awesome IKEA hacks.

It’s been a very long time since I last posted something, so I’m going to post something today.

I adopted two kittens about two months ago. One is named Olivia, but I think that’s a stupid name and one still doesn’t have a name. I can’t tell its gender because I’m bad at pets.

Also, that is the TRUE AND HONEST reason as to why I haven’t been posting/updating my site/doing anything productive/etc. Seriously.

Over this past summer, I spent about 90% of my time interning at LanguageMate, a startup in the healthcare/technology field. I learned some things. I’m going to make this post sound better in the future you guys but it’s here now so when people ask me, “What did you learn there?” I can just give them a URL to this post.

Version control. Prior to the internship, I had never even heard of this and had no idea something like this actually even existed. I always wondered about how a team of people would manage and work with certain files so this was actually really interesting.

Documentation and commenting code are extremely important. When I was in high school and was taking my programming classes, I always got points off in a lot of assignments because I never commented my code. I kind of thought that my teacher was just taking points off because he didn’t like to give out 100s, but eventually I understood how useful comments were when I started working on my own projects. They’re even more important and necessary in large applications.

In software development, there are always multiple ways to get something done, but there’s always a ‘yes’ and ‘no’ way. There are thousands of ways to write a script that does something, but some ways are better than others. Even though something may work, it could be the worst and ugliest code ever written… which is bad because it makes it difficult to edit and for people who didn’t write it (especially interns) to understand it.

Also other miscellaneous things too, like how to commute and deal with things like that, but I didn’t think that needed a bullet point since it’s not really that important I guess.

I am looking around the room staring at random things and people sometimes. I don’t think they’ve noticed. I just finished writing code for two tickets and I’m waiting for more work to do. I don’t really know what to do in the meantime. I am looking over a ton of source code for a project and not fully understanding most of it, but it’s okay because I am only a soon-to-be college student and intern, so I’ll understand this all in the future someday. Maybe.
